SHRM Foundation News

Did you know:  The SHRM Foundation’s mission is to mobilize the power of HR and the generosity of donors to lead positive social change impacting work, workers and the workplace.  It provides research-based HR solutions to educate and develop HR professionals and opportunities for HR professionals to make a difference in their local communities.

Just one of the SHRM Foundation’s many initiatives is the Veterans at Work Certificate.  It is completely free and open to all, meaning that an applicant does not need to be a SHRM member nor hold a SHRM credential to earn this certificate.  Through this certificate program, an applicant will learn the value that skilled veterans bring to the civilian workplace, demonstrate their commitment to attract, hire, and retain these talented professionals and earn 10 professional development credits toward SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP recertification.  The SHRM Foundation's Veterans at Work Certificate requires the completion of five tasks consisting of two surveys, two learning segments, and a short quiz.  Applicants must complete all tasks satisfactorily to earn the certificate, as well as to earn recertification credits if someone already holds a SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP.  To learn more, check out the SHRM Foundation website. https://www.shrm.org/foundation/about/Pages/Veterans-at-Work-Certificate-Program.aspx

College Relations Committee - Call for Volunteers

MVHRA provides many different types of support to college students, especially the SHRM student chapters, MVHRA student members and other academic solutions. The College Relations Committee (CRC) has a variety of programs designed to provide ongoing contact between students and MVHRA.    We need YOUR help and participation to be successful!

Volunteer Opportunities

  • MVHRA Luncheon Hosts (2 Hours)  – Host a student at an MVHRA luncheon! CRC will arrange it ahead of time; all you do is meet the student at 11:00am at the luncheon and host them at your table! Talk with them about your job, introduce them to people you know at the luncheon, and let them observe how networking works!   Contact Betsy Brown at tbdbrown@gmail.com for more information!
  • Work Engagement/Speaker Program (Varies) – We need MVHRA members to provide meaningful work experiences and employment opportunities such as internships and short/long term projects for HR students.  Do you need an extra pair of hands for a special project? Host a college student for a period of time to help you get it done! Employee file audits, updating job descriptions, an I-9 Audit…are just a few projects to consider. Contact Carlina Figueroa at carlina.figueroa@sinclair.edu for more information.
  • The Speakers Program (1 Hour) – Share your expertise! Give WSU students a glimpse of what HR is like in the real world! Share stories of successful projects or speak on an HR or Management related topic. Contact Linda Dean for more information at   linda.dean@dmax-ltd.com.

Whether you have A LOT of time to volunteer or just a LITTLE, there are a lot of options! Please consider giving back in the

2019-2020 school year!

UPCOMING MVHRA MEETINGS AND EVENTS

Workshop: The Latest Updates in Labor & Employment Law / Litigating an Employment Claim from Start to Finish

Speaker: Matthew Bakota, Auman Mahan + Furry

Location: Sinclair Community College

Time: 7:45 AM - 8:00 AM: Registration & Continental Breakfast

8:00 AM - 11:15 AM: Professional Development Workshop

In this two-part workshop, Matthew Bakota of Auman Mahan + Furry will cover (1) some of the most recent updates in labor & employment law and (2) litigating from start to finish an employment claim that has made its way to court.

In part 1, Matthew will cover some of the latest updates in the following areas: workplace safety; overtime rules / wage-hour; discrimination; employee handbooks; political speech in the workplace; Ohio supervisor liability; and others.

In part 2, Matthew will present a new topic for MVHRA. Matthew will take attendees through the phases of litigating an employment claim in court, to help HR professionals better understand the pros, cons, potential time commitment, cost, and distraction that a lawsuit can become. Goals include equipping HR professionals with knowledge (a) that they can use to help their organizations decide how to handle employment claims before they get to litigation, (b) that they can use to help their organizations through the phases of litigation when it is unavoidable, and (c) that they can use to help improve their organizations’ approach to personnel files, record-keeping, electronic devices, and other common evidence in employment litigation. This should allow HR professionals and other attendees to become even more valued partners in the organization when it comes to mitigating risks associated with employment claims and developing solid processes and strategies prior to and during court litigation.
