Leaders are Good! (So said the 6 year old)
Erin Henry, MSA, PHR
Servant Leader MVHRA 2012-2013
This month’s topic was inspired by my daughter, Olivia. After sharing with her some of the topics I’ve written about she said, “Write about ‘Leaders are Good’.” I was intrigued by her “matter of fact” profound wisdom which lead me to asking her more questions like, “Why are Leaders Good?” Her response: “Because they help people Mom.” I thought about that for quite some time. I thought more about her skills relative to leadership. As an example, we recently went to the park with the 11 year old neighbor boy, Grant, and I watched them playing together. Mostly, she was “bossing” him around the playground. Interestingly enough, she leads, he follows, and they help one another. This led me to the age old question, “Are leaders born or made?” As evidenced by my observation, her ‘bossing’ is a form of ‘an unrefined leadership’ competency. His ‘followership’, often includes ‘upward managing’ and building to improve her ideas and it is certainly better than reality television!
Perhaps all leaders are not good, but the good ones are those that lead from the heart; not for themselves, but for the sake of others, the cause, or the mission. Leadership is not age, experience, or title dependent. The leaders that are ‘good’ are in fact the very ones that ‘help people’. The good leaders are the ones that walk the talk, inspire a vision, seek growth and change, and empower others. A great book that explains “The 5 practices and 10 commitments of leadership” is The Leadership Challenge by James M. Kouzes and Barry Z. Posner.
“Good Leadership” lies within all of us. The question is, “Are you willing to choose being a good leader?” Good leadership isn’t always about changing the world; it can be about influencing just one human’s understanding of it that can make it a better place to live! Olivia’s been doing that to me since the day I found out she was coming. Also, since the time of this writing, she keeps asking me what advice I need. Here’s to LOL (Lillian ‘Olivia’ Lowe), my most significant Research & Development project.

Workforce Readiness sponsored another successful Transition Assistance Workshop for Veterans in March!
The Workforce Readiness Committee sponsored the first of four Transition Assistance Workshops for Veterans March 20th and 21st. We had over 25 veterans attend and six local employers to assist with mock interviews. Many thanks to our members and the community who support this on-going initiative to serve the veterans in transition!
We still need more MVHRA Member volunteers to attend portions of the workshops and assist in answering questions, reviewing resumes and participating in mock interviews. Especially if your organization is committed to hiring veterans we would love to hear from you! (The mock interview portion of the workshop gives your organization a chance to check out the talent, and at the same time to provide valuable feedback to the men and women who have served our country!)
We could also use your help to get the word out to others that may have an interest in this program. Do you know of a veteran who is looking for transition assistance? Please share information with them about this program by clicking this link: http://www.mvhra.org/quickLinks/VeteransEmployment.cfm The workshop dates for the remainder of this year are: May 15-16 July 17-18 Sept. 18-19 Oct. 30-31
We are very excited about the difference we can make by sharing our knowledge and expertise with the veterans. We'd love your help to make this a successful program!
If you would like to learn more about the Transition Assistance Workshops please contact Robin Brun at 937-229-5358 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
