HR in Demand-Are YOU Prepared?

Erin Henry, MSA, PHR
Servant Leader MVHRA 2012-2013

“A dying profession?”  HUH!  BY FAR!  In a recent SHRM article, “Teaching Human Resources”, the article reads, “From 2010 to 2020, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics expects a 21 percent increase in the number of HR specialist jobs created.”  This information is consistent with what our own regional data suggests.  If you recall in January, CEO Jeff Hoagland with the Dayton Development Coalition, at a MVHRA luncheon, presented data the DDC collected regarding workforce shortages and surpluses.  The data indicates that in the next 5 years, if our region does nothing, we will have more HR positions available than people to fill the positions.  (We heard it locally first and the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics confirms it).

This is great news for HR practioners as that means, on some level; there is ‘job security’ because we will be in demand.  However, there are 2 sides to every coin, right?  Here’s the side I’ve been pondering: Are we prepared?  I frequently council job seekers and tell them that job security does not lie within a company, but rather in oneself.  It’s the (KASO’s) knowledge, abilities, skills, and other characteristics like education and certifications where one will find ‘true job security’.  The other piece of this is that we must have successors that are prepared to take over where we have left off.  What happens when you get that promotion that you’ve longed for or when that other company recruits you away from the work you’ve been doing?  Is there someone you’ve taught along the way who can step in where you left off?  If there is not, we then leave our organizations in a place of vulnerability.  Furthermore, part of our duty in being in this particular profession is to grow people.  I challenge you to “…begin with the end in mind…” (Stephen Covey) and tirelessly work yourself out of a job while ‘Teaching Human Resources’ to your successors.  It’s what our profession needs!  Here’s to our bright future!!

Are you a Strategic Business Partner in your organization?

If yes, please disregard and read a different article. If you answered no, then this is the article for you!

In today’s ever changing business world, business acumen or the ability to understand and deal with a business situation in a manner that leads to a good outcome is widely sought among Human Resource Professionals. Why you may ask?

Business leaders seek ways to consistently improve performance and develop their leaders. You, the human resource professional, possess the keys for the ignition.

Here are the keys to fire up your organization’s growth.

Key #1: Evaluate your performance planning system in conjunction with the Business line Leader. Are you measuring key job objectives? Are they aligned with the business goals of the company? Do they drive your organization’s growth?

Key #2: Evaluate your communications within your organization. Do you understand the business line data and the financial statements? Are you able to communicate your ideas effectively up and down the organization?

Key #3: Decision Making. Do you understand how your actions and decisions impact the key objectives of your company?

Seek out meaningful, strategic courses to increase your knowledge and provide you with a framework to become a Strategic Business Partner. SHRM and MVHRA frequently schedule meetings, workshops and seminars that have been certified through HRCI to help you obtain the keys to drive your organization to the top. Get Certified.
