It’s All About the Journey, Not the Destination

By Cecilia A. Vocke, SHRM-SCP, SPHR

A new year always brings excitement and anticipation.  I am excited and honored to be a part of this association and to lead us as we begin our 100th year.  HR has changed so much over the last century and the change will be exponentially faster over the coming years.  But one thing is constant and that is the value we bring to our companies.  HR is the heart and soul of the organization. We are the culture.  We are the nourisher and guiders of the most important asset to a company, its people.  As daunting as that is – it is something that is important and all of us should be excited!  What other profession gives the ability to truly impact an employee’s life?  I love this profession and I am happy to say it.  I challenge each of you to take a moment and reflect on how you ended up in HR – for some of you it was a deliberate choice for others it was purely accidental.  Whatever the reason – embrace your passion for the role and look for ways to share your knowledge and experience with others.  That is why our Chapter exists – we are here to encourage and support those in the HR field.  So here's to our profession, to YOU for impacting the company's greatest asset, and to our Chapter who for 100 years has helped us grow, learn, and connect!

Member Spotlight:  Amy Mitchell

Amy Mitchell is no stranger to multi-tasking and being on the run.  In addition to taking over as the new Chair of MVHRA’s Newsletter Committee and serving on MVHRA’s board of directors, Amy is a labor and employment attorney and the mother of four.  And she also runs, quite literally, having successfully completed the Walt Disney World Marathon earlier this month!

Amy is a Dayton-area native and a director with the downtown Dayton law firm Auman, Mahan & Furry.  Amy received her undergraduate degree from the University of Dayton and her law degree from the University of Cincinnati College of Law.  She is certified as a specialist in labor and employment law by the Ohio State Bar Association and advises employers in matters relating to termination, discrimination, harassment, the Family and Medical Leave Act, non-competition agreements and trade secret protection, wage and hour, and many other rapidly-developing labor and employment laws. A key to Amy’s success in her practice is her responsiveness to clients’ day-to-day needs and her ability to understand the many client concerns that factor into employment decisions.

When the need arises, Amy also represents clients in state and federal court litigation, and in administrative actions before the OCRC, EEOC, and the Department of Labor.  She has successfully represented many employers in all of these forums during her almost 20 years of practice.

Amy looks forward to working with the MVHRA and getting to know each and every member.
