December 2013 MVHRA Connections

Presidential Ponderings; Volume 2, Edition 12 December, 2013

It’s not always about the destination, it’s about the journey!

Erin K. Henry, Servant Leader

I’ve enjoyed this time of serving as your leader.  As many of you know, this association is near and dear to my heart.  There are many people to thank for this opportunity; it goes without saying the members, and previous presidents who have served before me, were all a driving force and security.  It also perhaps goes without saying that I am not an isolated act.  I’ve relied on a team of individuals, our board, each of whom offered a variety of uniqueness and energetic passion.  Together we have served always remaining mindful and carefully making decisions for the greater good of our members and our profession.  Thank you board for always being there for me offering the wind to keep the many parts of this ship moving forward!

A special shout out to a long time friend, colleague, and previous MVHRA President Don Holtvoight who inspired the “Presidential Ponderings” section of the newsletter.  Back in the day, prior to MVHRA being on line, Don penned insightful, witty, and yes, sometimes borderline offensive, reading material for our members under this same heading.  I hope to have taken his notion (and good heart) and used this as a tool to help inspire each of you to think about yourself and your profession a bit differently than you did before.

As the end draws near, I wish all of you and your families the Merriest of Christmases.  As the New Year begins, keep in mind, “It’s not always about the destination, it’s about the journey.” Therefore, enjoy life and the impact each one of you have on others and make every day of 2014 extraordinary!

It is my pleasure to present to you the results of the MVHRA Election of Officers for the 2014 Term:

HRCI Certifications by the Numbers

Job market analysts estimate that the current number of HR professionals in the U.S. easily tops 500,000. This number includes executives, managers, business partners and generalists along with specialists in compensation, benefits, training and development, labor relations and other areas. So, with over half a million HR professionals out there, how many have one or more HRCI certifications?

Below are the total numbers of HRCI certifications as of August, 2013:

  • PHR certified professionals: 73, 157
  • SPHR certified professionals: 52,271
  • GPHR certified professionals: 2,880

How many certified HR professionals do we have in Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky?  According to the HRCI, there are just over 9,000 in total across all three states, broken down as follows:

  • Total number of certifications in Ohio: 5,175
  • Total number of certifications in Indiana: 2,659
  • Total number of certifications in Kentucky: 1,573

And finally, what states boast the largest number of certified HR professionals? It should come as no surprise that California and Texas have the largest number of certified HR professionals with just over 10,500 in each.

Did you know that the HRCI now makes it possible for employers and others to verify any of the 125,000+ active certifications by providing an online Certificant Directory? In order to use the directory you must create a separate User Profile and you must know the HR professional's city, state and country.

SHRM Foundation News: Thought Leaders Retreat

Each Fall, the SHRM Foundation Thought Leaders Retreat brings together a select group of leading-edge thinkers and practitioners in the HR field.  It started in 1999 as a way for SHRM Foundation board members to interact with outside experts and to generate new research ideas.  From that beginning, the event grew each year to include members of the other SHRM boards and special guests.

Today, the invitation-only Thought Leaders Retreat targets a senior executive audience and focuses on strategic issues such as Rebuilding the Talent Value Proposition for What's Next (2010), Positioning Your Organization for Recovery (2009) and Workforce 2012: Attracting and Retaining Top Talent (2008). Participants explore issues shaping the future of the profession and their implications for research and practice.

Content summaries of past events are available on the SHRM Foundation website (www.shrmfoundation.org) under "SHRM Foundation Products" then "Thought Leaders Retreat".
