May 2014 - MVHRA Connections

Presidential Ponderings Volume 3, Edition 5

A Month of Gratitude

Kelly O’Connor, PHR, GBA
President/Servant Leader

The month of May always feels like a month to give thanks. We thank our moms on Mother’s Day, or on Memorial Day we feel thankful for the men and women who have sacrificed so much for us in the Armed Forces.

In the spirit of feeling thankful, I’d like to take a moment to thank all the volunteers that make MVHRA successful. We have a dedicated board of volunteers and committee members that give a lot of time and energy to our local HR community. For example, did you know our workforce readiness committee held a Veteran’s workshop and had over 50 Veterans register? Or that our college relations committee has rolled out a program where you could sponsor a student to attend an MVHRA meeting? Our programming committee has all of 2014 planned and are working on 2015 now. Our networking committee is coming up with innovative ideas and games that will help each of us know each other better. We even had a board member that performed a skit to help our fundraiser for Clothes That Work. There are a dozen other examples I could list, but the bottom line is: good things are happening due to the good people that are making them happen.

There are a lot of moving pieces within MVHRA. Our volunteers keep those pieces moving. Each of us are committed to helping our HR community and furthering the HR profession. It doesn’t go unnoticed, that these individuals are sacrificing family time or having to make up their volunteer time by working longer hours. They do it for the love of our community and HR.

So if you run into an MVHRA board member or committee member sometime during the month of May, please give them a hand shake, high five or pat on the back for all the hard work they are devoting to MVHRA. It’s been an awesome 2014 and we’re only four months into it. I can’t wait to see what this group of outstanding individuals that are not only my peers, but have become very good friends, will do with the rest of 2014.

Thank you to all of you who have helped the HR profession and our Miami Valley community!

College Relations Corner – Seeking Company Host Sponsors

The College Relations Networking Program is off to a great start since its launch this past March. As one of our participating student’s commented, “This program is going to be a huge success. Getting the chance to not only watch, but participate in networking gives a student hands on experience, examples of behavior, dress code and overall professionalism.”  The goal each month is to have students hosted by our members at the MVHRA luncheon meeting to encourage networking skills. We are currently building our 2014 calendar and seeking host companies and organizations.

It’s simple – the host meets their student prior to the lunch, introduces them to other MVHRA members, and then makes them feel welcome at their table, serving as a model on how to network.   The cost is only $12. So why not get involved?  It’s a great way to meet new talent and market our member companies, benefitting both students and MVHRA members.

To become a sponsor, contact Betsy Brown, College Relations Chair, at (937)429-9225 or betsy.brown@right.com for more details.

Will the raffle ticket drawn on Tuesday, May 13 have your name on it?

There is still time to purchase a raffle ticket for the Together We Can Make a Difference fundraising event.  We can think of many reasons to participate.  Here are just a few:

• All raffle proceeds will go to a very worthy organization, Clothes That Work
• Total entertainment packages like this don’t come along very often
• The winner will receive lots of free publicity, not to mention numerous new friends
• Did we mention the proceeds go to a really great organization?

If you have questions, we have answers.  Take a minute to check out the FAQ below.

Can you provide some raffle details?

Raffle ticket sales will continue until the drawing at end of the May 13 luncheon meeting.   If you are not able to attend the May 13 luncheon, Stan Adams will be happy to make arrangements for you to obtain tickets at a time and location convenient to you.  A more convenient option is available - simply provide your name and number of tickets desired to Stan via voice or text message at 475-3890, and your tickets will be included in the drawing.  Payment can be made via check to MVHRA, PO BOX 1321, Dayton, OH, 45401. Please indicate CTW on the memo line.  Stan can also be reached via email at A6240@aol.com.  Tickets are $20 each or three for $50.  For more information about Clothes That Work, see their website at www.clothesthatwork.org

Can you describe details about with game package?

The winner and guests receive exclusive use of suite 22 at Fifth/Third Field for the 7 PM, May 31 home game, plus twenty game tickets, two VIP parking passes, and a $220 Dragons catering food voucher.  The suite also has a private section of stadium seating where guests can watch the game, so this truly is a complete entertainment package.  More information about the various amenities that come with the suite and the catering service can be found at the Dragons web site www.daytondragons.com

I’m not a big Dragons fan, so why would I be interested in buying a ticket?

First, the proceeds benefit an outstanding organization, Clothes That Work.  Second, there are no strings attached to this package.  It would certainly make a great evening outing as an expression of appreciation for a team of employees where you work, or the winner could just as easily donate the entire package to any group or organization of their choice as a special way of saying thanks.

Can anyone buy a raffle ticket?

Yes, however we hope that most of the tickets will be purchased by chapter members or their co-workers.  If you’d like to sell tickets at your place of work, sales kits are available from Stan.
