Mock Interviews and Professional Development Opportunities Provided for Senior HR Majors at Wright State University

An event comprised of mock interviews and professional development was held for the Human Resource Management (HR) majors at Wright State University. This event was organized by Kelli Cowgill (member) and Betsy Brown (Chair), of the MVHRA’s College Relations Committee. The event was held for the graduating HR Seniors during their capstone course.

During this event, students were provided a choice of selecting to participate in mock interview or professional development. The mock interview program allowed students to go through an interview with a MVHRA professional and received in-depth feedback about their interviewing style. In addition, the HR professionals offered tips and suggestions about improving on future interviews. The professional development program offered the students an opportunity to interact with a panel of MVHRA professionals. Students could ask questions about HR careers, HR trends, and workplace issues. The HR professionals gave advice and shared their own experiences with the class as well.

There were 52 students in attendance for this event and 7 HR professionals from MVHRA who volunteered their time and expertise. Companies representing MVHRA included Right Management, VRI, Cintas, Oerlikon, DMAX and a retired member.

The feedback received from the students was very positive.  Those that participated in professional development believed it gave them realistic insights into what HR professionals do on a day-to-day basis, and the value of establishing a network of colleagues. Those participating in the mock interviews stated they received well-detailed feedback and advice to improve. The students stated this was a valuable experience and recommended this should continue in the future.
