SHRM Rolls Out Specialty Credentials

Submitted By Kay Phillips, MSM, PHR, SHRM-CP

SHRM introduces opportunities for HR professionals to demonstrate expertise in a specialized or focused functional area within the profession. These opportunities are in the form of specialty or micro-credentials.  According to SHRM, “A SHRM Specialty Credential is a recognition of competency-based professional development accomplished in a focused field of practice. Those completing a SHRM Specialty Certification have demonstrated an expert level of knowledge in a complex and continually-evolving topic area.” Currently, two micro-credentials are being offered, one in California Employment Law and another in Talent Acquisition. These micro-credentials can be earned by purchasing a SHRM micro-credential/specialty credential study package, completing the required online eLearning courses, and passing an online knowledge assessment through SHRM.

A micro-credential/specialty credential is valid for three years from the date of completion.  It cannot be recertified and can only be maintained through completion of an updated specialty credential learning program every three years. These focused credentials are designed to educate the HR professional on specific learning objectives and are meant to supplement, not compete with, the SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP certifications, which continue to be the “pinnacle achievement and global standard in certification for the HR profession” according to SHRM.

HR professionals do not need to be certified in order to obtain a specialty credential; however, each of the current SHRM specialty credential programs is eligible for 25 SHRM-CP/SHRM-SCP professional development credits (PDCs) towards recertification. If you want to show your subject matter expertise in Talent Acquisition (or California Employment Law) and aren’t yet ready to pursue SHRM certification, consider a micro-credential. Or if you’ve had your certification for a while and are looking for a way to emphasize current subject matter expertise, specialty certification is your opportunity.

SHRM is currently working on development of a People Analytics Specialty Credential.  Full details on SHRM specialty credentials can be found at www.shrm.org or by contacting SHRM Customer Care at 800.283.7476, option 3, Monday through Friday 8:00 am – 8:00 pm U.S. Eastern Time.
