 THIS MONTH'S ARTICLES

PRESIDENT’S PEN

By Matt Bakota

On the one hand, June 2020 will be remembered as the month in which the Supreme Court of the United States extended the anti-discrimination protections of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act to gay, lesbian, and transgender employees. On the other hand, June 2020 also will be remembered as a month in which we continued to see large-scale calls for change surrounding the issue of racial discrimination; a month in which people and organizations around the country were asked to acknowledge that even measures like anti-discrimination laws have not done enough to truly combat racial discrimination in our country, and that there is still much work to be done. Many people and organizations are demonstrating a willingness to listen to these calls. Many have already taken action in response, and many others are working on it. Yet, somehow, it seems there are still those who don’t want to listen.

Please understand that at MVHRA, we are listening. And we are acting. Issues surrounding racial discrimination and diversity and inclusion have been raised and discussed by many of our members at meetings of our new HR Tribes. These have been good, face-to-face discussions, with the help of technology. With many of our board members leading or actively participating in those Tribes, members’ feedback and ideas surrounding these issues are making their way back to the board. It has been helpful to hear from our members in this way.

We are also providing as much support as possible to our diversity and inclusion committee. This committee is working on things like identifying and providing resources to our members, to help them learn and be prepared to facilitate difficult and sensitive conversations surrounding race and discrimination. Just one example is the note that you’ll find below, from assistant committee chair Carlina Figueroa, with a link to resources that are accessible through Sinclair. Much more is in the works, and members are continuing to reach out to us about becoming involved and helping out with this very important committee.

Additionally, we are actively working with one of our partners in the community, the Dayton Chamber of Commerce, on an upcoming weekly webinar series that will include content and learning focused on the concepts of diversity and inclusion, which attendees will be able to take back to their organizations. We are also keeping an eye out for programming from other sources, outside of MVHRA, that we think may be helpful to our members. This includes easily-accessible programming being offered online by speakers with whom MVHRA has partnered in the past, such as Kwame Christian Esq., M.A., the Director of the American Negotiation Institute. (Mr. Christian also will be returning to MVHRA this November.) Ultimately, we want to be a reliable and valuable resource for members during these challenging times, on this challenging topic.

If you have any additional ideas on what MVHRA can be doing right now, in terms of further listening and action in response to these calls for change, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us. We are committed to listening to you, our members; and we continue to value our LGBTQ members, our Black members, and the diversity of our membership that helps make MVHRA the type of strong and welcoming community that it is. Thank you for incredible continuing support of MVHRA.

Message from MVHRA’s Diversity & Inclusion Committee

Submitted by Carlina Figueroa, Assistant Chair

During these difficult times, it’s important to begin open, honest conversations with our employees about current events and social unrest. Now more than ever, it is vital that we scrutinize our organizations’ policies and practices to ensure true equity and justice. If you are interested in learning more about how to best begin or have the conversation of diversity and inclusion, Sinclair Community College has a very extensive library of resources on their Diversity website, including podcasts, suggested books and movies, organizations, and webinars that may be helpful to you and your organization.

Additionally, in an effort to continue to build MVHRA’s Diversity & Inclusion committee, we are continually looking for MVHRA members interested in helping to develop programming, create meaningful content, and provide additional resources in this area for other HR professionals. Please contact Carlina Figueroa (carlina.figueroa@sinclair.edu or 757-358-0285) if you are interested in learning more about participation on the Diversity & Inclusion Committee.
