 THIS MONTH'S ARTICLES

PRESIDENT’S PEN

By Matt Bakota

This month, I just want to provide a few quick updates to our members. Here are some things to keep in mind in the coming weeks:

  • We are in need of a new chair of the Certification committee. This is the committee responsible for making sure that our events are accredited through SHRM and HRCI. The time commitment typically is a few hours per month, with the primary tasks being performed remotely, mostly via email. All committee chairpersons, including this one, become members of the MVHRA board of directors. Serving on the board is a great networking, learning, and professional opportunity. The main qualifications for this position are being a current member of both MVHRA and SHRM. If you are interested in hearing more about it, please contact me as soon as possible.
  • We have some great programming coming up in November 2020. On November 10, we have a virtual professional development workshop featuring a nationally-renowned speaker, Kwame Christian, Esq., M.A., Director of the American Negotiation Institute. The topic of the workshop is “How to Find Confidence in Conflict and Negotiate Effectively.” Then, for the lunchtime webinar, we have a great panel discussion put together by our Member Engagement committee chair, Steve Black, called “Building Your 2021 HR Playbook.” The panel will feature many current MVHRA members and a wide-ranging discussion. For more information on these events, please visit the registration page at www.mvhra.org.
  • Big news for December 2020. We are – as of now – planning to offer an in-person member appreciation luncheon on December 8 at Sinclair. It will be in the main hall to provide plenty of space for attendees. For those preferring to attend virtually, however, the event also will be streamed as a webinar. A small committee of very creative MVHRA board members, led by VP-Programming Darla Cade, is working on holiday-themed HR content that will be educational yet also provide some much-needed comedic relief. We hope you will join us in whatever way you are most comfortable with for this event.
  • Last, many of you have contacted me with questions or ideas this year, so I wanted to let you know that my contact information has changed. My new email address is matthew.bakota@dinsmore.com, and my new telephone number is 937-586-2629. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me with any questions, concerns, or ideas as we finish out 2020 and look forward to 2021.

Thanks for your continued membership and interest in MVHRA. We truly appreciate it!

Virtual HR event – College Relations Committee

A virtual event titled “Recruiting and Interviewing during COVID” was held for Wright State undergraduate students as part of their staffing course on October 1st.  The members of MVHRA’s College Relations Committee (CRC), worked in collaboration with the WSU faculty advisor, Dr. Kim Lukaszewski to make this event a true success.

The virtual event provided the students an opportunity to find out how several local companies in the Dayton area, were responding to the challenges around recruiting and interviewing during a pandemic.

There were 3 panelists and 1 moderator along with 100 students in the virtual event. The HR professionals represented various companies which included: Kelly Cowgill from Cintas, Carrie Brunello from 11th Hour Staffing and Lauren Hemm from McGohan Brabender.

The feedback received from both the HR professionals and students was very positive.  The students felt very comfortable asking questions in the virtual session and we believe it was a valuable topic and timely for those seniors getting ready to start looking for positions in the near future.

A very special thank you to all who participated. It would not have been possible without your support.
